Strictly Come Dancing 2017: Week 5 Review (Quick Recap)

Once again, I really do apologise for this being up so late - I was meaning to do a rewatch last night but I feel asleep early and woke up late so as I did last week, I'll just be viewing the dances from the BBC website and trying to do 5 thoughts based on that. Halloween week will be as normal as I'm on my own to watch it.

Davood & Nadiya - Jive - "Tell Her About It"

1. Thumbnail picture has Nadiya's hair looking a lot different compared to the actual dance (it's as if they dyed it before the dance, but it's more pinned up in the performance as well)

2. #newGlebconfirmed

3. He really needs to stop with the mouth being open all of the time. It may have worked for Chris Hollins but it's not going to work for you Davood. Also I did have to rewatch one part to see if Nadiya threw in a sneaky lift but she did just about keep one foot on the floor.

4. It wasn't necessarily a bad dance by any means, but it wasn't that great either. He kept up well with Nadiya in parts but you could see places where he just lost energy. He also needs to pay attention to his free arm and to try to improve his arm lines in general - yes you need to throw it out in this dance because of the speed but what you have to do is place it well and get some shaping through the hand like Nadiya does, Davood just had flat hands for a lot of it.

5. Overmarked for me, I would go with Craig's score and therefore a total of 18 (all scores out of 30 as no Bruno)

Mollie & AJ - Viennese Waltz - "Anyone who had a Heart" (RECYCLED SONG ALERT! - Patsy & Robin in series 8, Sunetra & Brendan in series 12)

1. Not the most flattering thumbnail of Mollie there, bless her (she looks a bit like Katie Price in it)

2. Took a bit too long to get into proper hold (37 seconds I counted) but at least they were dancing from the beginning which I think is why the judges didn't say anything.

3. Mollie's best dance for me, hand on AJ's shoulder was exquisite throughout - nothing for Craig to moan about there - the choreography was beautiful (see Janette this is how you do a contemporary mixed with traditional routine, more on hers later), footwork seemed impeccable. The only thing I noted was Mollie's right arm in hold looked to be straight, she just needs to relax that a little. But seriously, a great dance, these two might get to the end yet.

4. Those trousers. Enough said.

5. I'd say this was undermarked slightly, I'd go for a 26 I reckon.

Simon & Karen - Charleston - "Fit as a Fiddle (and Ready for Love)"

1. I think that thumbnail sums it up.

2. Not sure why Karen was so happy at the end, it was probably Simon's worst dance after the Paso.

3. He got the characterisation somewhat, I can give him credit for that. But, I think this was Karen's attempt at recreating Kevin's Star Wars Charleston with Kellie and it just didn't work.

4. Took them nearly 40 seconds to be rid of the fiddles (I do think Simon was struggling with that section the most, should have removed them a lot earlier). I do sympathise with him on the swivel though, he was definitely better on his left foot than he was on the right, but really I do feel that if a celeb cannot swivel (and I cannot do it either - practiced it like how Joanne demonstrated and I know what my feet are meant to be doing but they just won't do it) then they should skip the Charleston as they'll always be marked down for it. Lacked in energy somewhat too.

5. I think the judges were being too kind here, I'd give 13.

Debbie & Giovanni - Rumba - "Baby Can I Hold You?"

1. Gio had a black shirt on in the thumbnail rather than the white shirt he wore in the performance.

2. I did get reminded of Cherie Lunghi's gorgeous Rumba with James (I was never a massive fan of his but that dance was spectacular) so Debbie did really well for that.

3. I love the chemistry between these two, the way he looks at her when she's walking away from him near the end, it's almost as if he's checking her out too.

4. They did miss a hand grab for the spin before the rendée (I may have spelled that incorrectly, if so then let me know and I'll make note of it for future reference) and I would have liked to see a little more lyricism from Debbie with her free arm, she was going for it but she wasn't fully extending through both the arm and the hand; her hip action also looked a little off in places.

5. A little overmarked for me, I do feel Mollie was better so I would give Debbie a score of 23.

Brian & Amy - Jive - "It's Not Unusual"

1. I swear they make Amy really put on her accent for the live shows, it's never normally that pronounced.

2. I have to agree with one of the Goggleboxers from when they watched this - a point to them just for doing the Carlton!

3. Technique-wise it wasn't great: Brian wasn't pointing his feet on the kicks and flicks, his free arm was awful, he seemed to forget the routine in some places....... tell you one thing though, he did put the energy in, that I have to applaud him for. Characterisation was great as always too.

4. Amy evoking the Spirit of Gusset-Flashing Joanne there.

5. I would have marked him a little higher than Simon - 14 for me. Did he really mess up in the dance-off then? I would have kept him over Simon - they're about the same in terms of technique but Brian can sell a routine better and he had a standout routine (American Smooth) whereas I don't think Simon will ever have one (although his Waltz was getting there before the tragic ending).

Susan & Kevin - Cha Cha Cha - "Shout Out to My Ex"

1. Just the thought of Susan and Craig being in a relationship.....

2. I don't often say this, but Wardrobe did a fantastic job with Susan this week, loved the hair too.

3. The judges are right about how Susan taking too large a step means that she loses technique, but I do feel that in hold at least, Kevin could help with that a little by shortening his steps to make it easier for her. Susan has the opposite problem to Jonnie in that her top half is much better than her bottom half (though she does have some decent hip action here).

4. This series should basically be renamed 'The Emasculation of Kevin', and I loved the choreography (as I usually do where Kevin's concerned).

5. Undermarked for me, I would actually put her equal with Davood on 18.

Aston & Janette - Waltz - "Can't Help Falling in Love"

1. As a contemporary dance, this would be great - as a Waltz, not so much.

2. Janette's hand placement on Aston's shoulder was much worse than Mollie's on AJ's - and she's the professional!

3. Too many breaks of hold, too many tricks. Yep that's Janettography for you. Sometimes it can work but in a lovely slow dance like the Waltz it just looks frantic. Nice lyricism though.

4. Aston still seems to hunch over slightly when in hold, and I don't know how he's going to sort that out - maybe get Aljaz in to help?

5. Overmarked but that's par for the course with these two (aside from their Cha Cha Cha which was brilliant). I agree that it wasn't as good as Debbie's Rumba so I'll score it 21.

Ruth & Anton - Samba - "Love is in the Air" (RECYCLED SONG ALERT! - Natasha & Brendan in series 1, Ashley & Ola in series 11)

1. THAT. COSTUME. REVEAL

2. I do have to give Anton kudos that he's willing to send himself up like this though. Bravo that man.

3. Yes it was more a parody of the Samba than the actual dance but that was probably the best option for Ruth (just look at the thumbnail and you'll see what I mean).

4. What Ruth really needs to look at is her free arm, and her arm placement generally - the thumbnail is a great example of this: Anton has his arm up and placed with shaping through the hand, whereas Ruth's arm is bent at her side as if she's going to do the robot and the hand is close to what Craig would call 'spatulistic, dahling'. If she can improve that then it will help her in both Ballroom and Latin.

5. Probably about the right mark I think, so 16 it is.

Gemma & Aljaz - Foxtrot - "Believe"

1. The thumbnail says it all but I'll explain it anyway.

2. What could have been such a beautiful dance, was kind of ruined for me by how Gemma was looking up at the ceiling throughout all of it. I get that she was wanting to improve her hold and that she might have struggled with motion sickness like Davood did in his Viennese Waltz, but it was so obvious that it just spoiled the mood of the routine.

3. I think she also had the same problem that Mollie has with her hold - right arm just a bit too straight. Footwork was excellent though. Her lines are much better on the whole, she gets great lyricism through the arm but just needs a touch more shaping on the hand to make it perfect. She was doing it and she's almost there, just a little polish needed.

4. Can anyone explain to me the significance of the clocks? I don't quite understand that part.

5. Slightly overmarked for me, but better than Aston so I would give a total of 22.

Joe & Katya - Paso Doble - "Diablo Rojo"

1. Right up there with his Jive for me, that was seriously good.

2. As I have mentioned before, I use Danny's Paso from last year as my guide; Joe got the shaping down for the most part, which not many male celebs do, he just lost it through the hands on a couple of occasions (think the thumbnail was one of them). It also wasn't quite as masterful as I would have liked, but he did get the spirit of the matador and presented Katya very well.

3. That double spin and the kick going into the end position were fantastic.

4. Credit to Katya for her choreography on this one. Personally I would have liked them together a little more, but Joe does seem to be slightly better out of hold so it was probably the right choice.

5. Bit overmarked, definitely not a 10. I think he was about equal to Debbie if not slightly better so I would score that a 24.

Alexandra & Gorka - Samba - "Shape of You"

1. Credit has to be given - she absolutely gives it her all in every dance going.

2. Still a little pigeon-toed in places, and the cucarachas were not executed that well.

3. She did have good hip action though, and her arm lines were perfect

4. I really don't like it when the ladies noticeably mess with their hair, and Alex did it twice near the end, just try and flick it into place if possible otherwise wait until the dance has ended.

5. I agree with the score, Joe was a little better for me so 23 it is.

Jonnie & Oti - Quickstep - "Part Time Lover"

1. Oh Jonnie, please do not cut your hair because you're one of the only men I know of who can pull off a ponytail

2. I loved this, loved loved loved it. Oti's choreography spot on again.

3. Jonnie's footwork was fabulous, wasn't expecting it be so light but what worked for him in his Jive worked for him again here.

4. I would like him to tuck his bum under a little more, he looked slightly hunched when in hold. Also his left arm seemed to be in an odd position to me? I'm not sure on that one.

5. I have to put him with Alexandra and Debbie - 23 for me.

My Leaderboard:

1. Mollie & AJ - 26
2. Joe & Katya - 24
=3. Debbie & Giovanni, Alexandra & Gorka, Jonnie & Oti - 23
