The Apprentice 2017: Week 1 - Burgers

Our favourite business reality gameshow is back! And so am I to bring you my take on the programme. The reviews might not be as detailed as they were last year, at least to begin with whilst I try and work out who everyone is....., but hopefully they'll still be somewhat entertaining! There may be a few swear words in places so apologies if anyone gets offended by that. Candidates' names will be in bold, and coloured according to which team they are on (which I will also bold and colour when the names come up). The advisors and LAS will also be bolded and coloured when their names appear. Hope you enjoy!

Initial BR:

·         Nice little Brexit joke there Alan

·         At least he’s stopped saying ‘rez-ooh-may’

·         Intro’d to Elliott and Michaela, Andrew and Siobhan, Anisa

·         Michaela ‘I’m no Karren Brady’ yet has a turnover of £3m over 2 businesses, LAS asks what she’s doing there; her response is that she’s from Bolton and she hasn’t peaked yet (taking over Gemma Atkinson’s ‘I’m a dead normal Northern lass, me’ shtick from Strictly)

·         The task: create a burger to sell, most profit wins (in other words, make shit stick)

·         PMs are Sarah for the girls and Danny for the boys (he’s in manufacturing, nuff said; so he’ll probably be shit)

·         Nice little cameo from the former winners, excluding Joseph (shame as I loved him in his series). Mark’s accent seems to have got more Aussie since I last saw him – maybe it’s because he’s with Leah who has also got even more Oirish (and I didn’t think that was possible).

First Stages:

·         The girls go for Graphene (though I did like Victorious Secret) and want a beef and chicken ‘luxury’ burger; agreed with Karren on how it’s not really luxury if using common meats

·         The boys eventually go for Vitality (Claude criticises Danny for being indecisive) and a ‘healthy’ burger (turkey and buffalo for meats)

·         Siobhan having a little sexist moment when stating that Sarah should think about who will be best at selling to men (which 'Women in Business' Karren picks up on of course). Bushra sub-team leader

·         Danny decides on Charles for sub-team leader

Crack of Dawn:

·         Up at 2am the poor things.

·         Sarah wants Liz to negotiate alongside her with the butchers, Liz says to listen to the wholesaler but Siobhan butts in saying not to listen to them too much as they’ll just rip you off – erm, no-one was asking you love.

·         James buys organic turkey for £9.25 a kilo (he asked for £7 per kilo initially and butcher wanted £9.99), Charles manages to get £17 per kilo for the buffalo but doesn’t really negotiate

·         Liz gets the beef for £6 per kilo, Bushra’s team the chicken for £3.60 per kilo (wanting crap chicken), down from £4.

Production:

·         Liz is on measurements, does she mess up the quantities?

·         Jeff and Elliott faff over the labels whilst the girls go simplistic – even though by law they should have branding and nutritional info on them…….

·         Sarah says to focus on the luxury aspect with premium ingredients, Karren’s all ‘why did you buy crap chicken then?’ wants to sell at Canary Wharf for £5 per burger. Does not like Siobhan, and Siobhan shows why by trying to get out of working with Liz by describing Liz as faffing with the burgers – well did you offer to step in and help? No? You can’t talk then love.

·         Danny leaving the pricing to be done over the phone to ensure that they can get enough burgers made. Charles decides to hold off on heading out.

Selling:

·         Liz and Siobhan arguing again – their squabbling causes the orders to be backed up.

·         The guys arrive late to the market and Jeff and Elliott struggle to sell

·         Charles stopping making the burgers to work out the costs, Harrison saying Charles talks too much; phone call between the two sub-teams involves Charles trying to talk about costs but Danny shuts him down wanting to focus on producing and selling. Jeff does an aside blaming Charles

·         Anisa does an aside calling Bushra a micro-manager, but then falters on the pitch. Michaela almost saves it, but Bushra and Anisa were both talking over her; Joanna calls Bushra out.

·         Label mess-up from Jeff and Elliott – the crumb on the turkey is not organic so cannot be described as organic (you think they would have asked this at some point?).

·         Sarah moves to grab office workers, Siobhan shades Sarah for not selling. Liz advises Bushra to go ‘£1 per pack’ for last 15 mins. Sarah wants them to sell at £4 per pack, cue Joanna selling 40 packs to a burger shop for £2 per pack.

·         Lots of fire selling going on, Sajan shades Danny, and Michaela shades Bushra.

The Initial BR:

·         Graphene sounds like ‘a Northern energy drink’ according to LAS (ironic as I'd say the other team name is more like a drink); Anisa and Michaela asked about the quality of the chicken. Liz chimes in on the manufacture, but Jade/Bushra and Siobhan all blame her. The burger was compared to a constipated tortoise. Joanna tries to use the £2 per pack as strategy, Bushra lies saying the £2 came from the PM.

·         Sajan goes into marketing speak about getting the buffalo for £17 per kilo, Charles tries to claim credit. Charles tries to claim credit for costing, but Ross (?) agrees with Danny that Charles should have been making burgers; Charles blamed by Danny for not listening to him

·         £374.87 spend, £611.65 sales = £236.78 profit (Graphene)

·         £394.62 spend, £280.45 sales = £114.17 loss (Vitality) = girls win

·         The girls get a meal cooked by Tommy Banks (Britain’s youngest Michelin-starred chef and GBM veteran). Siobhan shaded Liz again, Liz reckons some of the decisions she made contributed to the win.

·        At the CafĂ©, and Harrison gets blamed for the failure in location, Elliott blames Danny, Charles says the reason they left late was due to the labelling (he’s not worried, reckons Danny is at fault).

Losing Team BR:

·         Jeff blames Harrison for the location change, Harrison goes ‘what ideas did you have?’ (quite right my boy, and there was a nice little tumbleweed moment when no-one answered)

·         Charles wants to know the breakdown of the girls’ costings (they won, you lost, just leave it at that eh?)

·         Sajan/Harrison/Charles argue the reason for the delay was due to the labelling. Harrison shading Charles for doing the numbers whilst the others were making burgers. Andrew joins in.

·         Charles tries to blame Jeff and Elliott for the labelling.

·         Danny picks Charles and Harrison; Harrison not happy. Danny changes to Charles and Elliott.

Final Team BR:

·         Danny – ‘not strong enough, couldn’t lead’ (Claude)

·         Charles – ‘doesn’t listen to anyone’ (LAS)

·         Elliott – ‘poor seller’ (Karren)

·         Elliott and Charles try to pin blame on Danny saying Elliott shouldn’t have been brought into the BR. Elliott saying should have been Harrison for Brixton.

·         Claude asking where’s Elliott’s notes for the costings?

·         Elliott blames Danny, Danny blames Charles, Charles also blames Danny.

·         LAS feeling Charles is disruptive, Danny made serious errors, doesn’t know what Elliott did on the task (helped to mess up the labels LAS, you're welcome). Cannot have disruptive people, but task was a disaster and ‘with regret’ Danny fired. Charles given benefit of the doubt.

·         Danny feels biggest mistake he made was trusting Charles.

·         Jeff says team would be stronger without Charles

Strategy and the Boardroom - My Thoughts:
  • With this kind of task where it's all on profit, the girls had the correct approach by going for low-cost ingredients to mark up higher. The boys must have bought a lot less product if you look at the initial spends of both teams, so if it was a 'be penalised if you have any left over task', it looks like it would have been closer.
  • Danny kind of had the right idea in prioritising production over costing so that they could be heading off and selling earlier, but he should have said to the sub-team that the costings would be worked out whilst the main team were en-route to the selling location. This way Charles would have looked even more of an idiot than he already did for leaving the production so that he could work out the costings (and go wrong multiple times in the process of doing so).
  • He did the right thing in the end by bringing Elliott in over Harrison, but there would have been a black mark against him for a) bringing in the wrong person initially, and b) changing his mind so easily (there would have been one against him if he'd gone with Harrison anyway of course, but go with me here). I do feel Charles should have gone too, but then he's their 'kept in for good TV' candidate it seems. Siobhan will be one of those as well should she get in trouble.
